Microsoft Launches Its First In-House AI Image Generator, MAI-Image-1

Microsoft has introduced MAI-Image-1, its first internally developed text‑to‑image model, now integrated into Bing Image Creator and Copilot Audio Expressions. Announced in October, the model is praised for fast, photorealistic output, especially in food, nature and artistic lighting scenes. It will also supply visual art for AI‑generated audio stories in Copilot’s story mode. Microsoft has made its first in‑house AI image generator, MAI-Image-1, publicly available through two of its consumer products: Bing Image Creator and Copilot Audio Expressions. The company first announced the model in October, and AI chief Mustafa Suleyman highlighted that the system excels at producing images of food, natural scenes, artistic lighting, and photorealistic detail.

Performance and Capabilities

According to Microsoft’s blog, MAI-Image-1 is designed to generate photorealistic imagery with sophisticated lighting effects such as bounce light and reflections, as well as detailed landscapes. The model is noted for its speed and quality, enabling users to see ideas on screen quickly, iterate rapidly, and then move their work into other creative tools for further refinement.

Integration with Copilot Audio Expressions

Beyond static image generation, MAI-Image-1 will also produce AI‑generated art that accompanies AI‑generated audio stories in the “story mode” of Copilot’s text‑to‑speech platform, Copilot Audio Expressions. This cross‑modal capability aims to enhance the storytelling experience by pairing visual content with narrated audio.

Microsoft’s Broader AI Strategy

Earlier in August, Microsoft announced its first suite of in‑house AI models, including the speech model MAI-Voice-1 and the text‑based MAI-1-preview. At that time, the company indicated that MAI-1-preview would be used in certain scenarios within its Copilot AI assistant, suggesting a gradual shift away from exclusive reliance on OpenAI’s models.

However, the latest update notes that the Copilot chatbot is transitioning to OpenAI’s newest model, GPT‑5, while also offering Anthropic’s Claude as optional alternatives for users. This reflects a hybrid approach where Microsoft builds its own models but continues to provide external options for specific services.

Position on Bing’s Image Creator Platform

On Bing’s image creator website and app, MAI-Image-1 is listed alongside two other AI models: OpenAI’s DALL‑E 3 and GPT‑4o. This placement gives users a choice between Microsoft’s proprietary model and two well‑known OpenAI offerings.
